Hey,
I'm having a little problem here. I'm putting Ubuntu Linux on my Thinkpad 600 and I'm having issues with the sound card (not uncommon). I need to run IBM's PS2 software to verify the ports and irq setttings and stuff for the sound card. I got the newest version from here: http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... IGR-4ZFPEG

Is there any way to make all that stuff bootable so I can run it and check the settings without actually installing it?

PS- I just ordered an MMC-1 400MHz module off ebay I'll have to post pictures of my custom paint job on my laptop!

Bart's PE boot CD is a good option. You need an XP machine to build it with, but you can install programs as you build the CD. Then when you boot the CD, said programs are available for use. It does not always work - I haven't yet got Cain running properly on a CD, but I will give it another try (sometime when the urge catches me).

is the windows pe the only way to do it? i've tried playing around with that before, and i'm not a huge fan of it. hence why i'm turning to linux instead of windows xp lol

Two issues with Linux boot CD's I have tried (Phlak and Knoppix) is that (1) I had trouble installing my own linux software on the CD, and (2) in any event, you would probably have difficulty getting the software you want running in Linux). I run Ubuntu myself now, but have not tried constructing an live, custom CD with it.

Have you tried to use Thomas Hood's program called tpctl?
It does, in linux, much of what the PS2 programs do.
