I'm hoping some one can help me out with this. I can't start my machine, error 190... It's tragic...

My Thinkpad 600X (2645-4EU) started crashing a couple of days ago. The low battery LED -orange- would blink and suddenly it powered off, even though the AC adapter was connected.

Since I got the TP, the battery (used) could never really hold a charge, but now it's just dead.

Is there a way around this, besides replacing the battery? Can I simply use the power adapter, even with a dead battery??

It sounds like you might only have one real problem: the AC power adapter may not be working correctly. With the battery in the laptop, the laptop turned off and the AC power adapter plug removed from the laptop, the battery LED should not be lit. Plug the AC adapter into the laptop and you should either get an orange LED, indicating that the battery is being charged or a green LED if the battery is fully charged. If you do not get any lights, then keep the AC adapter plug connected, remove the battery and try turning on the laptop. Yes, you can run the system without any battery installed as long as the AC adapter is working. If the system does not turn on, then I would say your AC adapter has failed (or the power outlet in the wall is not working). Normally these power supplies are available fairly cheaply on eBay but you would have to find a seller willing to ship to you. IBM had two models of AC adapters; 56 watt and 72 watt. Either one will work with your 600X. The same goes for the battery. eBay is a fairly good source but there are many on-line sellers of batteries for the 600 series systems.

(edit: As long as you are using a genuine IBM power adapter, they should work from 100v to 240v AC input. Check the label on the adapter. I don't know what your AC power standard is there but check to make sure that whatever adapter you are using can work with the power system in your country.)

I tried removing the battery. It worked a couple of times, but a while after logging into XP, the comp just shutted down on me, without a warning. After a few hot boot tries, the Thinkpad start up screen displayed a 190 error (low battery critical error)

I pretty much agree with you on the failing AC adapter, but I'm a little puzzled by the low battery error. Does it make any difference for running the system on AC power if the battery is dead or partially charged?

Both the adapter (02K7010 model) and battery are IBM original parts... I'll check eBay- that's where I got my TP 600X!
