What is the brand/model of this or similar dvd/cdrw? it uses 40 pins but is slim? (see below)

DVD Drive installed

DVD/CD-RW drive rear, with 44 to 40 pin convertor installed.

Since I have a HD Ultrabay for my 600E, I might take it apart and use the header to install a dvd writer instead.
Since the caddy or 600E CDrom is expansive, nor do I want to buy USB 2.0 card+external cdrom..

Slot-loading CD/DVD/Combo players are not something normally seen in laptops except perhaps on Apples. Conventional wisdom says "ask the owner of the website"... (email link at the bottom of his page).

As far as installing a DVD burner inside a 600e, you:

1) May not have enough processor power for supporting DVD burning (check whatever program you are thinking about using for its minimum system requirements)

2) Cannot use the connectors from a second hard disk drive adapter for the Ultrabay simply because of the space taken up by the DVD drive won't allow for it.

I'm not sure where you are (you haven't specified your location in your profile) but a simple CDROM drive for the 600 series can be bought for $15-$20 USD on eBay. A broken one will be even cheaper and would still work for you since you really only need the plastic caddy. Can you be a little more specific in what you are planning/want to do?

Why would like to do that? Can you please let us know your 600e specifications? Machine type number?

But then I would need a 40 pin to 44 pin (3.5 inch to 2.5 inch) adapter, which doesn't exist. oh well.
I was thinking DVD and HD would support DMA so burning DVDs would be fast enough at 4X. I don't have my 600E here right now. but this was what I was planning.
Disassemble the Ultrabay HDD adapter, extract the plug part only, then that plugs into the 3.5 inch to 2.5 inch adapter, then it connects to the slim type adapter, then that connects to dvd rom. I know it will be a bit outwards. but since I have a 19mm thickness drive installed (after clipping off some plastic, and loosen the front screws). Well my Thinkpad 600E is ugly
I don't like buying from USA because of the surprise I always get customs (I live in Toronto). and its hard to monitor when someone lists something on ebay that I am interested in (for canada), what program to use?

I normally hate to use the word "impossible", so I'm going to word my response against using that term... I do not believe it is possible for you to fit a 19mm thick drive inside the 600E's Ultraslimbay without major changes to either the keyboard or the motherboard (or both). The 600 series Ultraslimbay will accept 12.5mm drives, an industry standard thickness for laptop optical drives (there are some thinner). Anything thicker than that simply will not fit. Now, if you are referring to the bezel (i.e. front face plate), then, yes, that can be around 19mm "tall", but the actual drive thickness should be just under 13mm. You should be able to fit something like this UJ-840 DVD burner into the 600E:

Again, the front face plate may need to be trimmed slightly for it to fit totally inside the 600E bay's opening (and allowing the drawer to open and close), but no special adapters need to be used other then the normal caddy that you must bolt to the outside of the drive. It's the same caddy that is on a standard 600-series CD-ROM or DVD drive. Built into the caddy at the back is a connector for the optical drive and a small printed circuit board which converts the connection into the one inside the 600 Ultraslimbay. If you buy a 'bare' drive like the one in the eBay auction, then all you need to do is transfer the caddy from your existing optical drive (assuming that it's designed for the 600 series Ultraslimbay) onto the new drive.

This is basically the same thing I think you are talking about; putting an optical drive that was originally designed for another Thinkpad into the 600 laptop.

Hi sorry for late reply.

I don't have caddy for my cdrom/dvd in 600E, I never won bidding because I am such a lowballer/bid within Canada only.

my current machine uses a 19mm 2GB 2.5" HD. I can fit 19mm to ultrabay too, just install the ultrabay as empty, then flip up (slightly) the keyboard, then fit the drive in. the right side of the keyboard will have a hump and you cannot tighten back the screws. Thats how I installed WinFLP (a topic that nobody seems interested here) without a CD-ROM drive.

I asked the admin here because I think he said he had many, but he reply he will search for it but no message after. It also depends how much he sells it for. since I don't know things coming from the US and give me a surprise customs charge that I don't expect.

Hey, wait a second, that's not "fitting" a 19mm drive into your 600E! That doesn't sound like it fits at all!!

I agree, this doesn't sound like "fitting". I would fear problems with shorting something out by doing this.

Also, are you sure that your hard drive is a 19mm? I thought that the largest recent drive that would fit would be a 17mm drive.
