TP 770X, 98SE, IRQ conflict ???
TP 770X, 98SE, IRQ conflict ???
In Device Manager, under Hard Disk Controllers
The " Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller " is showing a conflict ( in resources ), with the two "Standard Bus Master IDE Controllers".
I've been thru the trouble shooting wizard and made no progress. The IRQ's in question are #14 & #15.
Where can I find the list of IRQ's & thier assignments ?
Can I change the assigned IRQ ? ( How ? )
I checked on a TP T20 ( Win. 98 ) and this Intel IDE Controller is only shown in the USB sec. of Device manager.
It's also in the 770X USB sec. of Device Manager. ( IRQ 11 ).
Can anyone make sense of this and offer some help ??? J.D

This was a common problem with the 600E series. Could be fixed by running the Thinkpad Configuration Utility. Try it on your computer.

Assuming this is a fresh install of Windoze 98SE on your 770X, then this should be fixed by running an IBM registry patch called "APM2APM.reg" supplied with the Windows 98 installation supplement files - ThinkPad 770, 600E/X [Document ID: MIGR-4FJ3SC], otherwise known as the Supplemental File Diskette. Installation instructions are included in the readme file on that page.
This error occurs in all clean installs of Windoze 98/98SE on the 600/770 series with USB ports. Apparently Windoze misidentifies the USB controller as an additional IDE controller. After applying the patch, the device conflict should disappear and a new device will appear in the USB section as an Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller where it belongs.

Yes, I saw that you mentioned that in your original post. Not sure why that is. Maybe the device doesn't get moved to the USB area like I thought, but to another spot -- there are a couple power-related system devices which also contain the "Intel 82371..." name. Here is the default 770Z Device Manager list for Windows 98 [Doc ID: MIGR-4BBN92]. Inexplicably, the 770X listing is actually missing the key USB section when it loads on my browser, but the 770Z and 770X should probably look the same I think.

That Device Mgr. look's pretty much the same as mine, a few differences.
While I was back in it, I "Removed" the Intel. controller from the Hard Drive section . When I re-booted it said found new hardware and loaded the software for it ? So it's right back where it was ?
Guess i'll have to try the suppliment install. The read me file, indicates that it's to be done on "initial install" of 98/98SE. I'll have to re-read it and make sure what I'm doing, LOL. J.D

The IBM file is a self-extracting .exe file I think. Then all you do is find the right subdirectory, locate the APM2APM.reg file, and "merge" it into your registry - this can be done from Windows Explorer or from your desktop. Then reboot. That's it. Note that the APM2APM.reg file is not the same as the APMINST.reg file. For APM2APM.reg, it shouldn't matter that you've already installed 98SE. The rest of the Supplemental File Disk is for other stuff which is better to install before completing the 98SE install.

Hello Jimmy.....
I also have installed 98 a couple times on 770's......running the apm registry key Pkiff mentioned will clear the issue right up...!!!
1.Unzip the files(keep track where they unzip to)
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. In the Run window, type (Substituting A drive for where the files extracted to)A:\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click OK.
4. The following Registry Editor's window will appear, Are you sure you want to add the information A:\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registry?
5. Click Yes. A successful message window is displayed.
6. Click OK to exit the registry editor screen.
Fixes it right up.....
Later....Greg St.L

TP 770X, 98 SE, IRQ Conflict ???
Many thanks to JimmyD for the question and pkiff for the answer:
Their solution for the resource conflict with "Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDEController" is also working with WIN ME installed on a IBM Thinkpad 770 Z owned by one of my friends.

IRQ conflict in hard drive controllers
There is a thread who's title includes 600E, Win98se and conflict (At the moment it is just a few threads down from this one) I have a 600E
The 600 and 770 are "Same family" and have the same issues (Which is why they are grouped here)
I followed the procedure in that thread (ran apm2apm ) it updated my registery and my yellow circled exclamation point went away and has never returned.

Nothing adds excitment like something that is none of your business
