There isn't really a possible way to use your computer without your hard drive. I mean thats where the Operating System is run from. I suggest you buy one. It shouldn't cost more than 5$ for one right?

I think you can use your hard drive without a caddy but thats pretty dangerous. What if your hard drive falls out and break some of the pins? Then you'll need a new hard drive and caddy. You could probably live without the cover for a few days, if your careful, but I really suggest you just wait and buy those two items. Patience is a virtue.

In order to use the computer without having a hard drive, you will need to run off a Live CD.

For more info on creating a Windows live cd, Google for BartPE. If you want to use a Linux live cd, I would suggest Ubuntu or Knoppix for good hardware support.

hey nutttso, good to see you weren't here for a week only to never come back like a lot of folks.

i'm not familiar with the 770x, but i've used a couple thinkpads that didn't have a caddy or cover. it's obviously not recommended, but mine never sustained any damage.

i believe a bootable usb drive isn't feasible with a 770x.

Due to the way the HD connects inside the 770 series you must use a caddy.

Bill Morrow, our host here, probably still has a few lying around, drop him a PM.

Hey here are the answers for the questions being asked.

1. The laptop will work with out a hard drive, but as suggested you will need to use a version of linux with a live CD. (Ubuntu works good but you will have to do a little work to get the sound card to work.) JHEM is right you have to have a caddy for the hard drive to rest in. You might also want a Hard drive cover if the laptop moves around a lot. (slides out easily)

2. The wifi card may or may not work with Ubuntu, search the web and you can find out pretty fast. (If you want just use trial and error)

If you are looking for parts try ebaying 770, 770e, 770ed, 770X, or 770z. The hard drive caddys are interchangable between all models. If you need a hard drive I have a 5 gig lying around, no caddy though. PM if you want it. You will only need to pay shipping. (Trying to clean out house.) I almost missed the part about needing an Op Sys, if you want the hard drive I will send you a copy of Ubuntu 6.06 (daper drake). Thanks.

If you search for TP770 CADDY in Google, you will find a few places that offer it.
