Can't find compatible cd rom for my 570 ultrabase
Dear Thinkpad fans,
I am trying to upgrade my trusty old 570 (model 2644). I have an ultra base FRU p/n 10L2149 but the cd rom (FRU PN 05K8873 recommended by the IBM web site does not fit. I am reluctant to purchase another cdrom unit for the ultrabase until I am certain it will be the right one. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance,

I don't have a 570, but I thought that the 600/600E/600X UltraSlimBay items were usable in the 570 series, except that you had to remove a spacer-wedge on the bottom of the devices.
Chris, does the CD-ROM have a screw (or two) holding a long, beveled, black piece in place, on the bottom of the drive, toward the front where the tray opens? If so, does it look like if you removed that black piece then the drive might fit your UltraBase?
Phil.

will try that
Phil,
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that. This has been a frustrating exercise. I suspect the company would rather we buy new computers than upgrade the old ones and for those of us who are not techies, it is a real trial by error exercise.
I appreciate your advice,
Chris

I checked the UltraBay table on the thinkwiki.org site and it appears to me that no changes are needed for the optical drive. Of course it's possible that the site is in error, but here it is for your reference:

I was unable to remove the screws from the cd-rom. And I got an email response from Lenovo telling me that the item I had was the right fit for the ultrabase. In other words, they haven't a clue.
So my best bet is someone who sees this who has the same ultrabase number P/N 10L2150 and FRU P/n 10L2149 can look at the product number on their cd-rom and pass it along. The model number for the one I got on ebay is xm-1702B. It claims to be FRU p/N 05K8873 but now I wonder if someone didn't tag it incorrectly.
Thanks for the responses,
Chris

It appears that this problem has arisen before for that specific P/N 05K8873:Chris Black wrote:I was unable to remove the screws from the cd-rom....The model number for the one I got on ebay is xm-1702B. It claims to be FRU p/N 05K8873 but now I wonder if someone didn't tag it incorrectly.
What CD-ROM goes into the TP570 Ultrabase?
[link goes to Google version of compsys.laptops newsgroup thread from 2001]
I do not know why this would be. One poster in the thread linked to above suggests that P/N 05K8873 might have been produced before there was such a thing as a 570 and therefore did not include the removable plastic "spacer"/"lip"/whatever. My own suspicion is that although the CD-ROM drive itself may be branded as an official IBM product, the caddy/holder it is held in may not be -- especially if you picked this item up off eBay.

FWIW, I have a working 570 as well. I have been able to use the Cdrom from my old 600E in it. All I had to do was remove the U-shape bezel as has been said earlier. It had 2 or 3 screws holding it and once that was removed, it fit nicely into the ultrabase.
The DVD drive I have in the ultrabase currently is FRU P/N 05K9068 and incidentally I got this off ebay and it was advertised as being for the 600 series. Guess I was lucky.
Unfortunately, I do not have the 600E again so I cant confirm what the part no the cdrom on that is.

I dont know if you are still looking into this, but, I have the exact same part numbers you are descibing and it does seem that some of the cdroms made for 600 will not fit fit into an ultrabase for 570
part # FRU05k8873 has the thicker bottom rib that is NOT removable...you need cdrom part #FRU27L3686...that one is interchangable between both machines...unscrew the bottom piece for use in 570 ...put it back on for 600.
hope htis helps
