I have this same problem, but I bought a 66mhz RAM card, because I read that 100mhz wouldn't work. Previous posts have said that it could be that my 600 is one of the earlier models that don't recognize more RAM.

Some PC100 will work, but generally when it comes to the vanilla 600s, it is best practice to only use PC66 ram, to get the full amount. With PC100, the second slot almost always reads 1/2 the ram.

Mixing Pc66 & PC100 memory on a 600 is ok, bad, or very bad?

It isn't necessarily about whether or not that you are mixing them, but rather the use of PC100 ram, period.
The FSB for the 600 is only 66mhz, whereas the 600E is 100MHz.
PC100 will work, if you have nothing else, but it will not always read the full amount. (ie. 224 instead of 256)
