Thinkpad 770E question (LCD, Video and Trackpoint)

I finally got this computer up and running but I have a few questions.

1) How can I change the LCD contrast?

2) Can I get any newer video drivers other than the ones found on the IBM website?

I need to have some more control over the monitor and general video options. I need an applet like Catalyst Control Center (a third party one maybe?). Is there one?

3) Can I reassign the middle Trackpoint button to act like a normal middle mouse button?

Also when I connect a normal PS2 mouse (2 buttons + wheel/3rd button) the 3rd button (and wheel) don't function. The third button acts as whatever has been assigned to the Trackpoint 3rd button. I just want regular Middle button functionality. Can I get middle button functionality on this laptop?

4) Sometimes the on-screen cursor moves slowly in one direction without me touching the trackpoint, and then stops after a minute or so.
Is this normal or do I have a defective trackpoint?

No you can't,

Normal, both my 600x and my 770z do that too but just for a few seconds.

No you can't

Actually, I think you should be able to do this by changing the setting under Control Panel -> Mouse -> TrackPoint -> Center Button -> select "Normal center button behavior". [Correction added later: this option doesn't appear there in the latest TrackPoint version! Instead, set the "Scrolling or Magnifying Glass" options to "Neither". In your case, the middle button is not working because your Microsoft driver is not providing that function -- nothing to do with your TrackPoint driver]. If that option is not available, check if you have the latest version of the TrackPoint driver installed.

Which OS do you have installed?

As cmarti implies, this seems abnormal. Are you using Windows 98/98SE? Anything later than that and the default mouse driver should automatically assign the middle button as a middle button, and your wheel should function with default settings. Under Windows 98/98SE, you may need to install a specific driver for your PS/2 mouse.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I am using windows 98SE. The thing is that the mouse that I have is a crappy one and no drivers exist for it. I didnt know 98 doesnt support middle mouse buttons but I will try and work around this.

As for the trackpoint driver, I am using the latest version (1.32) and here is what my trackpoint panel looks like (click the link below for picture). There is no such thing as "Middle mouse button behavior" anywhere.

Ok I found a solution to the middle mouse button woes:

I just installed the latest Logitech Mouseware (without uninstalling the trackpoint drivers) and the trackpoint gets detected as a PS2 2-button mouse. Pressing the trackpoint middle button apparently is the same as pressing both left and right buttons simultaneously.
Now on Mouseware you can modify the behavior of the Left+right simultaneous click as the MIddle Button. This functionality gets transferred to the trackpoint middle button and voila, the middle button on the trackpoint functions as an actual middle button.
