To shut off my 2611-451 (1400) each time, I have to use the on-off switch, (I cannot use Start - Shutdown - Shutdown, Restart, or Restart in Ms-Dos Mode, in Shut Down Windows screen ) consiquently each time I restart, TP has to do a scandisk. Question: Is this normal, and or could someone please direct me to solution? This unit is new to me, it appears to have all or most of its functions.

What happens when you try to shutdown from the Start button?

Screen refreshes to exactly where it was prior to attempted shut down, also cannot resize screen from, 640 x 480 and up, also upon start up I get NAV start ploblem. VXD missing, reinstall if you want answer. I would work around latter until I get to know this beauty a little better. Being able to resize would be nice.

With a very quick use of the power button on the side of TP I got screen that says: SafeOFF v 1.44 " Do you really want to shut down your computor?" I tried "yes" and still no joy.

Maybe try uninstalling safeoff? you can read about it here...

And rip NAV (Norton Anti-Virus) out by the roots. Pure unadulterated evil. It's famous for wanting to scan things that aren't there (floppy, network drive, CD, etc.) before allowing a shut down.

If you don't wish to use it, fine. But it is dead simple to corral Norton Anti Virus so it cause no shutdown pain. ... JD Hurst

I apprecite all this info thanks for replys. Now I would love remove NAV and all "its" connection w operating system. Is ther a link to, or could someone help me w instructions on how to (corral) castrate this one?

In general if you remove all it's components (including LiveUpdate) using "Add/Remove Programs" and then reboot and run a good registry cleaner (I like System Mechanic but there are many) that will kill the bulk of it. But there will still be traces.

Or you could check the Symantec support base for your version - they used to have a manual or full install procedure, not sure if they still do.

Or if you're brave fire up regedit and hunt for keys containing NAV, symantec, liveupd, etc. and nuke them. That's what I did when I had finally had enough of it, and it was great fun - very cathartic.

Would love to use Regedit, but I understand I have a virus causing Regedit not wanting to function. Can anyone tell me how to cause Regedit to become functional again? Alsowhat is the key to cause Windows menu to come up before loading, so that I can get into safe mode?

You don't need regedit to be functional to repair the registry; the registry cleaners that I would recommend are Registry First Aid, CCleaner, and System Mechanic although the last two have extra functionality attached where RFA does a really *deep* scan&scrub of the registry. I would run these in Safe Mode if you can.

To get into safe mode, press the "F8" function key during the Windows boot screen and that should take you into Safe Mode.

Appreciate that answer. I was able to boot into safe mode edit the last of the symantec problems. Now if I could remove virus if there is one. I cannot shut down from start button unless I use stand by. Is that the way the 2611 is to be shut down, or might there be a virus that disallows me to shutdown or restart from start button?
