windows 2000/xp on thinkpad 600e

I am having a problem trying to load 2000 or xp on my 600e.
the computer hangs when the software tries to setup .
I have to pull the battery in order to turn it off,The following is info on my machine:bios 11/20/99 inet36ww/machine type 26454au/slave controller 07/16/99 ihht08ww.Talked to ibm no help there. Also changed HD and CD

It could be a memory problem. Pull any extra sticks of RAM that you have installed, then try installing W2K or XP. After the installation, you can try putting them the RAM back in and see how it works.

Where does it hang when installing XP, during format, file loading, or when it reboots and starts to load windows, i.e where it says windows will finish loading in XX minutes.

I tried new memory,no go.As to when it hangs when it gets ready to set up,after windows installs it drivers.I tried talking to IBM but machine is not in warranty so that is why Iam here

I don't have any suggestions for your install problem, but while troubleshooting, you should be able to turn off your laptop by holding the power button in the OFF position for 5-10 seconds. This should force the laptop off regardless of whether it is safe or the system is frozen trying to complete some operation.

Go into EZSetup and run the full test suite on the machine.

If that's OK, download and run memtest86 for at least overnight.

If that's OK, tell us the exact steps you're taking to install.
