Can somebody please explain the difference between the -dock .vs. -base of this thing? I was looking at options for a docking station for a 770x when I ran across this confusing issue.

SelectaBase 770 is just a port replicator.
SelectaDock III is a full docking station. It's several times the size of the 770, has a built-in power supply and includes room for a half-height 5-1/4" internal drive, UltraBay, 3 PCI/ISA slots, an extra couple of PCMCIA ports, USB ports, IDE and SCSI, etc.
In order to use a SelectaDock, you need a compatible SelectaBase that snaps into the dock. Then your 770 slides into the Selectabase. (There are versions of SelectaBase for various TP 760 and 770 models that are compatible with a SelectaDock III.)
Here's a photo of a SelectaDock III with a SelectaBase 770 on top.
