770 Display

What is with the thinkpad 770's crude display? Full screen...gross resolution. Small screen...big black border. What's the point of a 14.1 " screen? Same problem when I hookup to external monitor.
My earlier model thinkpad 760xl doesn't have this problem. I've read several postings concerning this issue. Can there be that many solutions to the same problem?
I would appreciate any help any of you could provide to this computer novice. Thank you,
Stephen

Make sure you have the proper display drivers and that the resolution is properly set.

Thank you for the quick response to my inquiry.
What display driver would I need to install and what should I set the resolution at once I install the proper driver?

Which O.S. are you using?

Here is a link for the drivers.

You need this one:

Video driver IV (TR9397D) for Windows 95/98 - ThinkPad 770

With the driver properly installed, you should get a maximum resolution of 1024x768 on the internal monitor, or 1280x1024 externally.

Well the file was downloaded and installed. No effect.
This might be the problem: As I click through Settings, Control Panel, Display Properties, Settings, I cannot drag the tab from Less to More on the Screen Area selection.

Thanks again for your help.

What did you do exactly? If you just download the file and double-click on the icon, you are probably just extracting the files to a folder, not executing them. You need to go to Device Manager and install the driver.

Sorry about the delay in responding to your last post. I didn't have access to the forum for a couple of days.

I am getting this message:

"the location does not contain information about your hardware"

when I try to install the display driver from the A: drive floppy.
Haven't been able to figure out how to install the driver from my desktop in Win 98SE.

Thank you!

Are you following the instructions from the link cmarti gave? Can you tell us exactly when you get this message in the list of steps?:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
3. Click Start -> Settings and then click Control Panel.
4. Double-click the Display icon.
5. Click the Settings tab.
6. Click the Advanced button.
7. Click the Adapter tab.
8. Click the Change button. The Update Device Driver Wizard window will appear.
9. Click the Next button.
10. Select Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want and click the Next button.
11. Click the Have Disk button. The Install From Disk window will appear.
12. In the Copy manufacturer's files from: box, type C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY and click the OK button. The Select Device window will appear with a list of video drivers.
13. Confirm IBM ThinkPad 770/770ED (Cyber9397) or IBM ThinkPad 770X/770Z (Cyber9397DVD) is listed in Models field. If you do not see your model, click on Show all devices and select your model. Then, click the OK button.
14. Click the Yes button if the Update Driver Warning window appears.
15. Click the Next button at the Update Device Driver Wizard window. The video drivers are installed.
16. Click the Finish button to close the Update Device Driver Wizard window.
17. Click the Close button to close the IBM ThinkPad(Cyber9397) Properties window.
18. Click the Close button to close the Display Properties window.
19. Windows 98 prompts you to restart the computer to make the display driver change effective.

Hi ,

I could not find any Windows ME video driver for TP 770 X in IBM's site,

is Win 98 video driver available for windows ME too?

Thanks in advance

For Windows ME, use the Windows 98 drivers. If no Windows 98 drivers are available and the OS doesn't have drivers built in, use the Windows 95 drivers.
