I have a thinkpad 600e with the sr-8171 dvd drive. It is P2 366 with 128 mb ram and runs really well, I recently purchased a ibm cd/dvd combi drive for it but in my ignorance bought a drive the caddy for my original drive does'nt fit. The new drive is approx 9mm thick and my original is about 12mm thick also, the pin connection on the new drive are different from that on the caddy. Is there any way to adapt the old caddy to fit the new drive ?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
The new drive you purchased (9mm) sounds like an Ultrabay Slim model meant for T4x systems. I don't know of any way you can mount that drive inside the UltraSlimbay of the 600 series laptops. I'm pretty sure that the rails (caddy) for drives that go into the 600 systems will not fit on the 9mm drives. The pin connection on the bare drive is adapted to the one inside the Ultrabay by an end piece to the caddy.
