600x Beeping
600x Beeping
I have a 600x running Windows XP that when unmuted is giving a constant beep. My sounds and Notifications are set so that no beeps should be generated. My power options are set that way as well. It beeps when plugged in and on battery. Any ideas?

If it is a continuous beep or whistle, then you could have an un-muted microphone input. Double-click the speaker icon in the system tray, select Options then Properties. Make sure that a check mark is next to the Microphone line. Click OK. The Volume Control Panel should show a slider for Microphone. Is the Mute box un-checked? If so, then click the box and see if the noise is gone.
If you are getting an intermittent beep, then I'm not sure what the problem might be. You could access the same Properties window, enable the display of the PC Speakers and then mute it.
Was there something that you changed recently in Windows? Install a new program or change some settings in an already installed program that is audio in nature?

It is a repeating series of 3 beeps and a pause.rkawakami wrote:If it is a continuous beep or whistle, then you could have an un-muted microphone input. I installed a few programs around when it happened (Firefox 2., Thunderbird, TVU), but I thought it at the time that the beeping was triggered by some kind of power/battery condition. Was there something that you changed recently in Windows? I have the exact same issue with my 600X. I reinstalled the OS today (windows 2000 SP4) It is present irrespective of whether the machine is plugged in on or battery. The only way to get rid of the beep is is mute via Fn-Backspace.
Anyone know why this happens and what I should do to get rid of it?

My guess would be a battery issue, but that is just a hunch. Are you sure that the battery is seated correctly: you are able to charge it while plugged in? And are you sure that your battery is holding a charge, or is it dead?ipatent wrote:It is a repeating series of 3 beeps and a pause.[...]I installed a few programs around when it happened (Firefox 2., Thunderbird, TVU), but I thought it at the time that the beeping was triggered by some kind of power/battery condition.

Go to your power properties and see if shutting the lid causes standby mode. If it does, change the setting to do nothing. I am thinking it may be caused by the lid switch. This does not sound like a typical battery warning, I think those are constant beeps. There are a number of events that also cause these beeps. Make sure that all the drivers are installed and the Thinkpad Configuration and Power Management software is installed.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

battery is in very good shape, it not dead. The power management features are also set to do nothing when the lid closed ... I am yet to install the thinkapd power manager, will report how it goes tomorrow.

I uninstalled and reinstalled winamp, and the beeping went away. No idea how it came, no idea how it went!
