replacement HDD for a 770E?

I need a replacement HDD for a 770E. Is there any limitations to this model or will any standard 2.5 Hard disk do

Any standard 2.5" notebook size drive will do. If you have the latest BIOS then the max capacity limit is probably 138GB or something. I personally have used 40GB 7200rpm drives without any trouble.
When you open up your current hard drive "caddy", you will see that the original 770E drives were 17mm high and filled the caddy to the top. Your replacement will almost certainly be 12mm or 9mm high, but you don't need to put any padding or anything in the extra space, just be sure to use the screws to secure the drive inside the caddy.

No, no heat problems, and noticeably improved performance.

I ordered a samsung 40 gig 2.5 drive and everything seems to go fine when installing the OS until it reboots to actually load up windows after the install and I get " a disk read error occurred press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart "
When I went to update the BIOS it said something to the effect of there is no update for my drive . My drive is recognized (samsung MP0402H) in the bios screen.
Is this drive not compatible? Why would it reconize it and say no update is needed??
any suggestions??

I'm not clear on what BIOS update you are talking about. What is the current BIOS of your 770E? I should have noted in my first reply that it is possible that you may have to upgrade your Thinkpad BIOS in order to recognize the largest drives.
Is there some reason why you think the problem is with your laptop and not with the drive? Didn't you have difficulties with this drive in another thread? Did you purchase the drive new? Have you run a full hardware fitness check on the disk? Is it possible that you are having some kind of partition configuration error?

I'm sorry for some reason I thought I had updated the BIOS but I hadn't. I only tried to update the HDD firmware.. Guess that's what happens when your trying to fix three PC's at one time ..
Anyway all is well with the updated BIOS ..
