1300i 1171 8XU 750Mhz Upgrade CPU

#1 Post by furiousmonkey » Mon Jan 22, 2007 8:59 pm

I have a ThinkPad T21 2647-8AU with an 800Mhz P3
and I want to put a 1gig processor in it.

Can I put the 800Mhz P3 from my T21 in my 1300i 1171 8XU which houses the 750Mhz P3?

A variety of people have put a 1G processor in the earlier Ts, but the majority seems to have used some extra precaution, but using Artic Silver as well as a higher rate fan from later models.

As far as reusing the processor in the i1300 is concerned; most if not all of the i Series machines had the CPU soldered in so it not a good option. I'd check the Hardware specs book on your exact model to see if it's socketed and if, so what socket. You can find a links to all the IBM ThinkPad specs books through the ThinkWiki site.

IMHO though, I'm not certain that getting an extra 50mhz is worth the hassle. If it was me, I'd max the RAM if that hasn't already been done, maybe upgrade to a faster (rpm) drive and tweak the OS to speed it up.
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

I had no Idea about the soldered on chips in my 1300i, I will look into that, although all the software tests I have done to bring up the CPU information, suggest that it is infact the same chip, as my 800Mhz CPU in T21, I will check out the wiki site you suggested.

I have infact over maxed the ram in the 1300, IBM said that it cannot go higher than 192, infact I have 320mb of ram with an increased performance (at first I thought it would see it, but not use it).

If I put a 1gig chip into my laptop, then I will see about the 50mhz upgrade, I might as well.

Thanks again for your help
