OK, with the good hints from here i tried myself to change from a 300-P-II to a Celeron 433 MMC2.
(600e MMC2 Slot Type 2645-550)
I managed it to change the cpu.
Easy with the german way to do it:
http://checkpoint-thinkpad.de/

Now when i start the thinki it got the tinkpad Screen and the lights got on.
Then the Memory comes up and shows me 294336 KB OK.
Then one normal beep comes.

And then?
Nothing.
The Screen freezes in this position.
The Cooler is running on slow motion and thats it.
I thought my thinki has to "think" about the new hardware but im looking now since 5 minutes on the screen.
I tried several new power-ups but always the same

Any ideas?

It sounds like every thing is working, but you may of accidentally bumped one of the jumper pins for boot out of place. Also, did you remember to disable the L2 cache? You do have to disable it for the computer to work properly. Refer to the 600 upgrade sticky at the top of this forum to see how to do that. Otherwise it looks like you preformed the upgrade successfully because the computer will POST.

Try booting with the old PII back in place. Your laptop will not boot with a Celeron because of the diference in architecture of the MMC2 board. The Celeron boards feature 440MX northbridge chips whereas the PII and PIII boards have 440BX. The 440MX does not support AGP which is a required feature for the video chipset on the motherboard.

In other words, a Celeron in a ThinkPad 600E or 600X is like Diesel in a Petrol car; it just won't work.

It's possible to put a Celeron in the 600E, no ?

I've never read anywhere it was impossible. :?:

Am I wrong ? Or not all the 600E accept these CPU ?

Thanks for suggestions.

I put the pentium back in.
And everything is fine again.

Im angry that i tried to figure the cpu at my loved thinki.

Now the charme and the Fine feeling is gone!

Im angry about open the srew plates. Im angry that i tried to change the cpu.
The Thinki is different now as before.
Im not sure and i cant say wha, but nothing fits again.

My wife used the thinkpad with the re-build Pentium yesterday evening and she said that she cant fine any differences to the status before, but i feel it.

Whren i re-assemblied the Thinki i had a problem with the cable from the keyboard.
I cant remember where i have to position it.
It is not very flexible and i thought it could only fit in one position.
But now i have the impression that there is mall hump oder dint (sorry not good german english) in the keyboard at the position where the cable is connected to the mainboard.

I can see the cable when i turn over the Thinki and reach the cable with my screwdriwer to a small slit or rit.
Im not sure if this was before.
Have anybody any suggestions how to manage the cable from the keyboard right?
Has it to fit under the keyboard-plate or to the small space between Subboard and frame?
I cant remember.
But i DO remeber that unbuilding was very difficult.
To stretch the Keyboard the first time up from the Frame was not easy. But now i re-assembled the Keyboard several times and it nearly bounces of the frame when i open the barbed hooks from the keyboard.
THere msut be something wrong during the installation but i cant imagine and see were the problem is.

Im so angry now.
My little thinki, what was realy in a very good condition, is now violated.
If god, eeehhmmm i mean if IBM wolud like us to change CPU they had build it so easy like changing HDD, Ram or Bios Battery.
It doesnt feel like before, do you know what i mean? :(

Hello,

I am running a 600E with a Celeron II 600 MHz. And it is working fine!

There are some Celeron boards supporting 440BX chipsets.
And yes, there are also some Celeron which supports the 440MX chipset.

Best regards
