Can it take 256MB modules?

Yes, if it is anything like the 600E, it should be able to use low-density 256MB PC-100 SODIMM ram chips. The computer may need the latest BIOS in order to use those chips though.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

The 600E uses the PIIX4E controller, and the 600 uses the PIIX4. It may or may not take 256MB PC100 parts. I'd suggest you buy from a place that will guarantee the parts to work (which isn't likely because IBM and Lenovo say that only 128MB PC66 parts will work), or you take your machine to a local parts shop where you can try the parts on the spot.

I owned two TP600E's before and used 256MB sticks on them. I asked the question because I wanted to know whether the TP600 can do the same. Anyone who actually owns a TP600 who can give a definite answer? And Atlas64, what is the full model number (e.g. 2646-85U) of your TP600? The official specs, such as those issued by IBM/Lenovo, are useless because they were released before the invention of 256MB sticks.

I asked about this a few months back - the response at the time was that the 600 CAN use 256MB modules, but they must be PC66, low density. Something to do with CL2/CL3 (don't recall all the details, though), if memory serves.
I had tried low-density PC133 modules, but didn't have good results. One of these days, I might go looking for the right ones.

I've never seen 256MB PC66 modules. They only go up to 128MB.Rob Mayercik wrote:the response at the time was that the 600 CAN use 256MB modules, but they must be PC66, low density.

Nope, they do exist - saw one for sale on eBay a week or two back.pianowizard wrote:I've never seen 256MB PC66 modules. They only go up to 128MB.Rob Mayercik wrote:the response at the time was that the 600 CAN use 256MB modules, but they must be PC66, low density.

Misadvertised I guess? Or it could have been 2x128MB. I am pretty sure they don't exist, which is why people always use 256MB PC100 or PC133 on the TP600E.Rob Mayercik wrote:Nope, they do exist - saw one for sale on eBay a week or two back.

I have never personally seen a 256mb PC66 ram stick, but according to memorystick.com, they do exist, as made by IBM, too.
