My pristine and flawless Windows 2000 600X...

It hasn't been correctly recognizing the LogiTech external mouse I've been using - since I did a fresh install of Windows 2000 around July(?) 2006 it hasn't seen all the buttons on the Logitech mouse.

Earlier today (in Administrator Mode), I re-installed the Logitech mouse drivers. Now, no mouse, no Trackpoint, not even a mouse cursor!!! Navigating using the keyboard, I've uninstalled the Logitech drivers, and then reinstalled the Trackpoint drivers. On boot, still no mouse cursor!

In the Windows 2000 Device manager, the mouse has a yellow circle with explamation point. The error in device manager says "The device cannot start (Code 10)"

(I can get a mouse with my old Win98 hard drive so I know it's not a hardware problem.)

I've got the Sysinternals Process Explorer running, and it appears that the trackpoint server is not running in the background. The Trackpoint is set to Enable in the Thinkpad Configuration Manager.

Just how do I get my Trackpoint back again???

EZSetup can disable your TrackPoint. I suggest you check there.

If that's of no help, I'd set the TrackPoint to disabled in ThinkPad configuration, reboot, then set it to Auto-disable and reboot again.

Tried all that. It seems, though, that the sad truth is that the LogiTech drivers aren't really compatible with Windows 2000 laptops.

I did more research until 4:30am last night and it seems that uninstalling ANY version of LogiTech mouse drivers, or re-installing the LogiTech drivers, on some Windows 2000 laptops can corrupt the registry and completely hose the on-board mouse, resulting in no mouse cursor.

According to LogiTech, ""Do not install any version of MouseWare 8.x (or earlier) into Windows 2000. It may crash your Windows 2000, forcing you to reinstall Windows 2000."

However, according to my searching this seems to apply to any version of LogiTech drivers, including the current version 9 drivers.

There are other problems that can happen as well - my videos had audio but no video, which indicates system corruption.

The consensus seems to be that, in order to fix this, Windows 2000 needs to be reinstalled...!

Fortunately, I had set a restore checkpoint two weeks ago (using V-COM's SystemSuite 6). I restored the SOFTWARE and the SYSTEM registry backups. I have my mouse back!

I think that I'm gonna have to ditch the LogiTech mouse and get myself a Microsoft mouse for safety's sake.
