I2612-49A Ram upgrade not working,other questions

help I just bought this off ebay in india,it just had 64 mb ram I tried putting in another 92 mb ram from my compaq aramada 1592DT which has been condemned the 92 is an odd no thou standard on that compaq model. when I opened up my thinkpad Both slots were full and I replaced the ram with 92mb, bios test only runs till 64 mb after that it stops can some one help as xp is crawling.

max supported ram is 256 on specs, compaq ram is from a MMX 233mhz latop so it should work right.

my bios version is V 3.01 R01A5e

my power cord jack is getting hot too what's wrong here.

can I play dvds on this

the trackpiont seems completely worn out in fact it looks bald like a ball,if I replace the button will it work?

anything else to pimp this up to max performance

Welcome to the forum. What model is your Thinkpad? The Compaq uses EDO RAM. You can go to 18004memory.com to find out what type of RAM your Thinkpad uses.

its a P III 499mhz,10gb hard disk,dvd rom etc.I checked the ram on the site both are 100mhz sdram

Your Thinkpad uses PC100 RAM, whereas your 1592DT uses EDO RAM. They are not compatible.

swapped one 32mb sticks with compaq stick still memory test shows 64mb,if didn't work shud ve stopped at 32mb rt?

this the original system configuration Thinkpad 1400 2621 49A i series
P3 500MHz 128MB 12GB HD Toshiba 6X DVD.

is there anyway to check if the ram is alright or maybe one ram bank is spoilt out of two??

Probably not, but you can test it by tossing in a DVD and see if Windows sees it.

Once you have 256MB on the Thinkpad, it will run WinXP fairly well.

A more complete description: PIII 500MHz (256K) 64MB RAM, 12.0GB HDD, 15.0 XGA 1024x768 TFT LCD, 6X-DVD, Internal 56K Modem, Li-Ion Battery, Win98

But remember, the person you bought it from could have swapped the DVD drive with a CD drive, so you should still find out for yourself whether it's a DVD drive.

Like I said, this Thinkpad doesn't use EDO RAM. You must buy a PC100 stick for it. I just found this page which says you can use low-density 256MB PC100 modules, i.e. you can have up to 512MB RAM! WinXP will run very well. Go to eBay and look for the part numbers listed on that page. I have used several 33L3069 and 33L3070 sticks and they are great.[/url]

wots with the mouse??

I got an ibm optical ps2 mouse,works well but when plug in my logitech optical using same ps2 to usb conversation pin logitech mouse lights up but fails to work.why??

there a small lcd in front of the laptop near the lid for what I dunno.can I get it to work?

its a dvd drive checked it,not playing movies on media player.get appropriate decoder not found error

ram fixed,one ram was not working.will buy a 256 later any chance it'll take more than 256 mb as the specs say 256 mb maximum

It sounds like you're referring to the infrared port. It's for transferring files between computers, and can be activated automatically by putting another Thinkpad nearby. Go to Device Manger to see if it's installed properly.

Windows Media Player doesn't come with any decoder. I have tried a bunch of DVD player freeware and none of them was good. I recommend you to buy a copy of PowerDVD (around $5US) on eBay. Get the oldest version that you can find, because newer ones require more powerful computers than your I series.

The page I mentioned says you can have 2x256MB to get a maximum of 512MB. I just checked Crucial.com (the most reliable) which also says you can have 2x256MB. But most other sites, including IBM/Lenovo themselves, tell you the max is only 256MB. It's because when this model was introduced, the highest capacity PC100 module available was 128MB. I would ignore those outdated specs and get two 256MB sticks to max it out. And no, there aren't 512MB PC100 sticks.

I finally bought an I-series 1400 Thinkpad (2611-452). It allows one to play music CDs without turning on the computer. The CD player has its own power switch, and the 2-digit LCD shows the track number. I've been using this I-series as a CD boombox and the sound is not bad.

Pianowizard i have some questions for you this isn't my topic but hey!

I have the i2000 series and i have my 128mb ram coming which will make it a 160mb considering the internal 32mb. Ok well i have been tryin to take apart the laptop to maybe clean up the fan for cooler temperature and to put the new ram/ possibly a wireless network card. I have taken out every screw on the back but still i can't seem it get to where the ram goes, this is my first time putting new hardware into a laptop so please any tips would be great!
