Disable trackpoint (error 8611)

My TP 600e has had a weird acting trackpoint for a week now, and earlier today it just refused to start up, giving me the infamous 8611 error.

I was hoping to disable the trackpoint via hacking the cmos, but I can't get the various hacks to work. They all refer to the 20h offset, but I guess that column 1 (or rather 0) and row 3 is a better way to describe the location of the bit I should be working on, right?

Well, according to http://matt.ucc.asn.au/thinkpad.html I should change "02" to "68" - which doesn't make it work. In fact changing it back to 02 makes the error 8166 go away but then I can't get past the screen where you can choose to start in "safe mode" etc.

Any ideas of what to do now? I'll start looking at going inside the TP to check the cables and maybe the battery. But just disabeling the trackpoint would be the bets in my opinion.

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

(irony: I orderd a brand new T42 the other day, but it won't be delivered until late next week...and I have to work!)

It seems like I finally managed to disable the trackpoint. When I booet and looked at Thinkpad Config, the trackpoint still seemed enabled (or rather auto-enabled) so I switched it off. Ihaven't dared to reboot et (bben backing up stuff) but when I do I'll have a look at the cmos and see what it looks like now.

Can someone help explain the response below in a non-technical way? My TP600E has error 8166 - is this something I could fix myself or do I need to get an expert? Or, is the PC toast? I just bought it (used), but it was "as is." Also, it has error 163, which other responses lead me to believe I need a new battery?
