8611 boot error

Good morning,
My name is Hans, I live in the Netherlands and I am new to this forum.
My thinkpad is a 600E PII 366 425 RAM type 2645AL INET36WW.
I bought this some time ago in Belgium, and it performs excellent under WINXP SP2.
The only little inconvenience is the french AZERTY keyboard reason that I bought on Ebay a US QWERTY board that arrived yesterday.
Unfortunately it gives the famous 8611 boot error, indicating a broken trackpoint as I learned from your forum.
The systemboard shows the following:
DEV 086 ERR 27 FRU 0010. I do not know its meaning.

I reinstalled the AZERTY board for the time being and all seems well again.

In earlier messages I saw a workaround for the 8611 error, by changing a value in the CMOS hex editor.
Not being familiar with hex editors I wonder how I can actually change a value, before I do anything wrong.

Your help is much appreciated.
Regards, Hans

If you can boot into the EZSEtup screen (BIOS), then select the config menu. From there press Ctrl+D to get to the Hex editor. Look at the 3rd row, 1st column, there should be 02 there...change it to 01 (by arrowing down to it and typing 01) then save and exit. When you reboot, it will disable the trackpoint, but you can still use an external mouse to operate the system.

Thank you for your quick reply!

In the meantime , before I reinstall the faulty keyboard, I am awaiting the answer from the Ebay supplier to my email complaint about the condition of the board that he has sent me.
