Hi, new here ...

I just learned by reading the posts here that despite IBM's claim, the 570 can take a 256MB mem stick.

I have one with a 128MB stick in (thus totally 192); I am wondering if I can feel the difference by replacing it with a 256. My primary applications on the 570 are email (outlook) and web surfing (firefox2or IE7), and sometimes X server with a couple xterms.

Advices are appreciated.

I went from 192MB to 320MB on my first TP240 and didn't notice any performance boost. I never did anything more than simple web surfing on that laptop though.

Thanks guys.

I am a bit surprised that the ram stick is not cheap (~40-50 total cost off ebay) -- maybe because it is rare now. How much is a 570 (192MB, 10GB HDD, no cracks/scratches, 30min battery) worth nowadays?

Around $100.

I noticed a nice jump in performance when I upped the ram in my 570 to 320MB. I am running Win 2K, and the response seems to be alot better, besides apps opening a little faster. Windows doesn't seem to page out as much either, (I still have the original, slow HDD in it) I'm totally happy with a 570 and 320MB of ram.

I was very lucky and found an 256MB IBM memory chip on eBay for $30 delivered.

Yep, the demand for it is huge but there aren't many of them around. But every once in a while, one gets lucky and can get it for less than $40 shipped off eBay. I snagged one for $18 shipped about a year ago. Search for both "33L3069" and "33L3070", make sure to check the "Search title and description" option, bookmark the search, and keep checking several times a day and eventually you will find a cheap one.

BTW, when I said I saw little improvement after upgrading my TP240 from 192MB to 320MB, I failed to mention that that was for Windows XP Pro. Yeah, it doesn't make sense at all.

Thanks guys.

I have two of these, might sell one to finance the upgrade of the other

When I bought them in 1999-2000 at "bargain price", they were almost $2k a pop ... I wish I had bought Apple stock instead ... :(
