Maybe this should be in the OS forums? If so, feel free to move it if its in the wrong place. BTW, I am running XP Pro.

Anyway, I can't get the sound to work when the laptop is booted up. When I go to the sound device properties & click on the Hardwarte tab, The device status says: This device cannot start (code 10)

So if I want sound, I have to uninstall the audio driver & then run add hardware wizard to get it to work. It recognizes the hardware and gets it working no problem by this method, but its a PITA do have to do this everytime I want sound.

Does anyone know why the device has to be uninstalled & reinstalled after every shutdown? It works fine once I reinstall it?

I had this problem. Fixed it by flashing bios. Turns out newer bios allows for better resource management under xp.

It looks like lenmullen is right about the fix here -- tfflivemb2 points to the same fix in another current thread.

Assuming you are speaking about your TP 600 2645 51U PII 266mhz 192mb machine (please identify your system whenever you start a new thread!), however, the link lenmullen points to above is wrong. You want the following BIOS instead:
BIOS Update (Diskette) - ThinkPad 600

Wingnut, if you don't have a floppy drive, you can probably find one used in one of the computer stores down on College Street, just West of Spadina, for about $25-$30. This is ridiculously expensive in my opinion, but you'll end up paying about the same after shipping costs, if you buy one on eBay and get it shipped from the U.S.

Note that you can use a floppy drive from the 770 series as well provided that you have the right cable (the 770 series floppy will not fit in your UltraBay, but you can boot from it when it is attached via the floppy cable).

If you can get someone to loan you a floppy drive to do the BIOS update then that would be your cheapest option. I live in Toronto and I would offer to loan you one myself, but am busy with personal matters and cannot arrange it right now. If you can wait a couple weeks, then I would offer to loan you one of mine (for free).

Whoops! Thanks for correcting that. The bios I upgraded was for a 600 with sound issues. I just grabbed the wrong bios link.

Thanks for the info. Sorry about the lack of info on my TP. I have the info in my signature, for some reason, it didn't populate to the original post? My fault for not checking. As sson as my new battery comes in, I will update the BIOS.

BTW, Thanks for the offer to borrow your floppy drive. I found a couple on E-bay for .99 each, so I bought 2 of them. Total with shipping came to $17. For the extra few dollars for the second, why not have a back-up. E-bay is a wonderful thing.
