I just traded a desktop for this laptop tongiht to replace my older 380xd...

I am woundering, will this i series 1300 1171-340 be able to upgrade the processor? it has a celeron 500 right now and what type of ram will it take? it has 64 mb right now and there is an empty slot for another stick. I tryed the stick form my 380xd but it didn't work (it also is 64mb)

Is this processor sodered onboard?

I ahve also read that this machine has a memory limit of 192mb... but people are about to put 312 in them.... it this true? and does it matter what type for ram?

Yes, the CPU is soldered to the system board....I'm not sure if there is a faster model i1300, but if there is, then you might be able to upgrade the system board from a faster model.

As for the ram....it uses PC100 ram...the Hardware Maintenance Manual states that the max is 192mb, but the 600 series said that the max was 288mb, and they now accept up to 544mb.

I have two more questions... The case is cracked over the left hinge... where can I get another screen case for this laptop? and is it common for these to crack there?

And... I read online on a review site that this one person bought a laptop just like mine and bougth a motherboard to a 1300 1171-7XG that had a 750 celeron processor on it and installed it in the 1171-340 machine to upgrade his processor... is this really possible?

Yes, you should be able to upgrade the systemboard just like that..as I stated above. I just wasn't sure off the top of my head if there was a faster model.

As for the cracked part that you need to replace...try eBay. The part numbers are available in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

FYI: The casing on the iSeries tends to crack often. I have two i1400s and both of them have cracks galore. When working on them, you have to make sure not to overtighten the screws, because that is where most of the cracks take place.

ok... you've been a lot of help, but i now have another question. My hard drive has a bad sector near the beginning of the hard drive. I was planning on getting a bigger one anyway. Is this a special hard drive? I ask because I went to take the one out of my older 380xd and the connectors are different (as is the size as i thought it may be as the 380 is very think). The 380 hard drive has pins like a desktop hard drive. And the drive in this i1300 has a different connector.... linda looks like an old parell printer plug but smaller.

what drive would fit this thing? i ahve never seen an hard drive like this.

ok after looking at my hard drive i relised that it an adapter plug thing on the end of my hard drive and that it has the pins like all other hard drives...

So would I be able to buy a hard drive off of ebay that says "will work with all laptops"???

The main thing is that you need to make sure that it's a Parallel and NOT a Serial drive. Otherwise, it just needs to be a 2.5" notebook drive, but while you are at it, you might want to consider going with a 5400 or faster rpm drive.

The highest processor you can go to is a 750 The 1300i came with two options the 750 Celeron and the 750 Pentium 3, I would suggest the latter.

Also with the hard drive, if you can find a 7200rpm that would fit that would be much faster for you, does your system have a CD_Burner? you can put one of those in aswell.

This just has a 24x cdrom drive.... i didn't know they made cd burners for these.... are they cd-rw/dvd or just a cd-rw... cause I'd like to be able to read dvd as well.

Is there a limit of how big a hard drive this thing will hold? I think I read somewhere it will hold a max of 36gig (or was that 26 gig) but I'm not sure....
