380xd memory upgrade
380xd memory upgrade
I have an old 2635-8au that currently has one stick of 64 mb installed for a total of 96mb. This is pretty much a single purpose laptop but due to software upgrade, I need a min of 128 mb. Will this computer take and recognize 128mb + the 32 to run this program or am I stuck getting a adifferent laptop? Thanks for the advise. The BIOS BTW is 97H4108 with a date of 6/15/98, version 1.07

I had a somewhat similar experience with three Pentium MMX laptops. I tried a 64MB EDO stick but two of them could recognize only half of it whereas the third one saw all 64MB. So LHoyer, to be safe, you may want to order the 128MB stick from Kahlon.com because they seem to guarantee that it would work, and if it doesn't, you might be able to return it. But $88 is a lot of money and is almost enough to buy a Thinkpad 600E!bigfoot2184 wrote:I have this same laptop and I ahve tryed with no luck... all I can get it to hold was 96MB of RAM.

And if you are the daring type... currently on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0090199561
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 0078719183
Looks to be the same seller (both IDs are in Oxnard, CA). This appears to be the proper solution for a 128MB module using the then state-of-the-art EDO memories back then. Additional information from the manufacturer:
http://www.avedmemory.com/products/dram.html
I would suggest contacting both the eBay seller and Aved Memory to get confirmation that the module will work in the 380XD.
edit: Found another one on eBay from a different seller (but with an auction, not a BIN):

Re: 380XD
I'm in the same place with whether I should try and upgrade the RAM in my 380XD. 160Mb would be nice and I'd be temped to run W2K if I had that, but I'm not certain I want to spend the money to experiment.
By all mean, post so we can see your result if you decide to go for it.

That's fanTAStic! Thanks for the good news! Now the OP has a relatively inexpensive way to upgrade his 380XD.Paul Pennington wrote:I bought a 128 MB module on eBay auction # 180040315055 for $47.99 with shipping. Worked fine in my 380XD 2635-FAU.
Lenovo.com doesn't have the drivers?Paul Pennington wrote:I went ahead and loaded XP Home just for grins -- it worked, but there are no drivers so the function keys didn't work, so I didn't activate it.
Think about it, this Thinkpad was originally designed for Win95, but it can run WinXP!

[quote="pianowizard"]Lenovo.com doesn't have the drivers?/quote]
Nope, they never wrote drivers for 2000 or XP.

Yes, it was quite a sight to see Teletubbies Hill on the screen. BUT: My 2635-FAU has a Pentium-II and 430BX chipset. The OP's 2635-8AU has a Pentium-1 and 430TX chipset. Microsoft says you need a Pentium-II minimum for XP.

Re: RAM
I'm going to go in search of some 128Mb RAM then!
160Mb would be a good start for running W2K.

Hmm, Microsoft used to say that 233MHz Pentium-MMX with 128MB RAM is adequate. At work, I am running Win XP Pro on a Packard Bell with those specs and it's slow but acceptable. With 160MB RAM, the OP's 233MHZ MMX 380XD should be okay.Paul Pennington wrote:The OP's 2635-8AU has a Pentium-1 and 430TX chipset. Microsoft says you need a Pentium-II minimum for XP.

I have the PII version of the XD, so that should help some. Now I just have to get my startup errors resolved and I'll be happy. On the other hand, I'm very happy with the performance of 98SE on this machine and since it's not a frontline computer, probably doesn't really NEED W2K.pianowizard wrote:Hmm, Microsoft used to say that 233MHz Pentium-MMX with 128MB RAM is adequate.
