Do the other LCD functions work OK (CAPS, Num, disk and floppy indicators)? If so, it may be a bad battery. If not, the LCD itself may be bad.

Hope this helps.

yes - CAPS, Num, disk and floppy indicators all work properly. it's the original LiOn battery though. Battery life is very short (1 minute?).

When you say battery life is short, do you mean the computer actually shuts down after about a minute, or that you get a low battery?

If this is the original LiIon battery, it is probably kaput. You might want to try to find another. If a known good battery restores the LCD operation, then you know the battery was dead.

The NiMH batteries used to have a switch on them; if you turned it off, the battery was disconnected. But the NiMH batteries aren't strong enough to power the 760EL, ED, XL, or XD models. They were for the C's and L's.

Hope this helps.

You won't damage the laptop by using the battery provided it still works to some degree.

I have been told that running a fully dead battery is worse than running with no battery (and the AC adapter).

Hope this helps
