TP 600E won't boot up

I have a TP 600E that will go to the logo screen and then display error I9990301 and I9990305 and then goes to a screen that appears to ask for a floppy. I tried rebooting with the windows ME boot disk but had no luck.
On a second try I hit F1 and reset the startup menu, also replaced the CMOS battery. In doing a HDD diagnostic got the errors DEV 017, ERR 22 and FRU 6010.

This is probably a bad HDD but want to have other opinions before buying another HDD. The diagnostic said the rest of the TP was fine.

If it is the HDD, can I replace a 10GB with a 6.4GB by just swapping them out or do I need to change the BIOS, and if so, how?

After changing the CMOS battery did you reset or initialize the bios?
As far as changing the HDD, you should not have to do anything except change the HDD and the bios should recognize it on bootup.

Yes, I reset the bios and nothing different.

The HDD makes a noise like it wants to work and then the errors appear. Also took out the HDD and replaced (reseated) it.

Back to the hard drive being replaced. I have never done this, if I go on E-bay and buy a 6.4gb (mine is 10.0gb), should have to do nothing more than plug it in and install the O/S???

P.S. Want the smaller hard drive so my son won't be tempted to download stuff.

Just remember that if you get a new hard drive you will need to transfer the caddy from the old drive to the new.

If you try to put a drive in without a caddy, it may not align properly with the connector and can give errors. Also, you will have a hard time removing it later.
