Here's a quick rundown on how DSL works:

- your regular phone line is used to deliver the DSL connection
- you can talk on the phone while still being connected to the internet (unlike a standard modem)
- there is a box that connects to your phone line that is usually referred to as a DSL modem or DSL router
- the DSL modem or router will have one or more ethernet ports (aka RJ-44 jack) or it will be wireless. Some provide both capabilities.
- a "filter" needs to be placed in-line with ALL of the phones in your house that is connected to the DSL line EXCEPT for the one going to the DSL modem/router. This includes the fax machine.
- your computer (laptop or desktop) does NOT connect directly to the phone line or DSL modem/router using a telephone cable
- instead, the computer needs to be connected with an ethernet cable or a wireless (aka, WiFi or 802.11a or 802.11b, or 802.11g) connection
- since your 600X does NOT have a built-in ethernet jack you will need to get either a PCMCIA-to-ethernet card or a PCMCIA wireless card

Your best best would be to have whoever is installing your DSL connection to also setup your internal phone wiring and your network connection. There's a fair amount of setup work needed to get either a wired ethernet connection or wireless system working properly. This includes installing software and configuring the hardware equipment (your computers and DSL modem/router).

I would recommend talking to your DSL provider, since some will provide support if you buy the card from them. I had Verizon here for DSL at one point. When I called them about my trying to get the wireless cards that I purchased elsewhere to work, they said that they could only provide support if it were the cards that they sold. I then asked about getting cards from them....they responded with "well, how many computers do you have"....I replied with "2 laptops" (which as most people on this forum know, is not even close). I asked how much.....they said "No charge".

I got two wireless cards to go with the wireless router that they had initially sent me....at no extra cost.
