Hi guys I'm a newbie to thinkpads and ive recently got myself a thinkpad 240 (400mhz processor) and I'm currently trying to upgrade it. ive managed to get windows XP pro on it (a custom lite version) but now i want to put windows 2000 (also custom) on aswell, i have the disc and COA etc but i cant get it to boot off my external CDROM (USB) even with the boot floppies.

so now i want to install windows 2000 and/or XP off the HDD with either Fdisk or DOS, as i have no prior experience can someone give me a walkthrough or tips on how to do this.
If anyone has any other ideas on how to install the OS' without booting from CDs i will consider them.

Thanks alot :D

F.A.S. (frequently asked stuff)

400mhz celeron
192mb ram (soon to be 320mb)
20gb HDD (5gb XP partition)
external floppy drive
external CDrom drive (usb)
if you need any more info just ask :D

Most likely your 2000 install disk is not properly a bootable disk. Search in Google for the boot record for a 2000 CD, then copy all the contents of the CD to your HDD. Use Nero to create a Bootable CD, using the image file found in the Google search, reburn and it should boot properly

thanks for your reply but that wont make any difference, i cannot boot off the cd drive at all. im either needing to boot off the HDD or the CD drive but with the use of floppies

it seems i have not properly described what i want to do:

find a dos boot disk with USB controller driver written in config.sys and/or autoexec.bat. As long as you can use floppy disk to boot the computer and make it recognize the windows installation CD in the USB cd-rom you are all set.

TP240 is not capable of booting from USB CD-rom by the way.

That sounds like it should work as ive installed winXP using the XP boot floppies. but the win 2k boot floppies dont support usb cd as far as i know.

Any idea where i can get a dos boot disk with the driver? i can use the floppy to boot and i knew that i cant boot anything from the usb cdrom.

Thanks
