240X Battery Life Indication in Windows

Hi, new to the forum and had a few questions. I was incredibly impressed by my sister's IBM 600E that she gave me when she was done with it that I decided to get a smaller thinkpad on ebay.

The 240x works alright, albeit with a noisy hard drive. The bigger issue I"m having is the machine will just turn itself off. I figured maybe the battery indicator in windows was fibbing and not telling the truth but when I restart the machine it has the same value. You would think if the battery was depleted it would not turn back on but it does. The last time it turned itself off I remember seeing the far most led blinking some color (don't know which I'm partially color blind).

The machine has 98se which I promptly replaced with 2k pro, upgraded the bios to the newest available version.

Welcome the Thinkpads.com!

What is happening is that Windows is detecting a low battery level and is shutting down. The blinking battery indicator (which would be amber at this level) means that the battery level is under 10%. Just recharge the battery and things should be fine, though I have no idea how good the condition your battery is in. If it is the original battery, and it was used a lot, then don't expect to get a whole lot of run time out of the battery.
