Hello all!
I am new to the world of WiFi. I would like to set this system up for the free wireless internet that the county I live in is setting up this year.

I have a couple questions:
First, I ran across a couple mini wireless PCI cards in the internet that are also shown on the parts list at the IBM website. Will these get me in the WiFi System? I read something in passing that they are 802.11 compatable, which is the requirement for WiFi, according to the county webpage.
If so, can someone tell me where I can get it manual for installation of these pcb's? The parts manual is not that explicit. It just shows them and the part number. (FRU 08K3309)

The parts available to me are 08K3309 and 08K3310.

Second, is there anyone that can tell me where I can get a reasonablly priced left hinge for this thing??? Some places are charging 200.00+ for the hinge set + caps. I am in need of only the left hinge and cap.

Any help will be appreciated!!!

I'd highly suggest a PCMCIA wireless adapter. Linksys, Belkin or any other name brand work great. Going internal WIFI presents too many problems in my opinion.

LH hinge....yeah, I've got an i1200 with the same problem. Does yours have the really wide LH hinge cover, (like around 3") or is it small (1" or so)? I'd look for a parts machine/donor myself.

my covers are about 1 1/2" or so. I wish I had the same type hinges as the i1200. Mine are the type the mount to the entire side of the LCD display. The 1200's don't. They are a lot easier to change than mine.

I am agreement with the PCMCIA wireless cards, but will the cards I mentioned work? I'm curious.

I guess I am going to upgrade this laptop until I get a new one. Just need to know about the card mentioned above.

A couple dumb questions:

I know you can't upgrade the processor, due to it being soldered on. Is the same thing true about the USB circuitry? I have USB 1.1 and would like 2.0. I cannot run a WiFi PCMCIA and a USB 2.0 PCMCIA at the same time, due to their physical size.

How about the CMOS memory. I bought a 128mb SODIMM to bring it up to 192mb total, but can a 256mb card work? Or am I restricted to 128?

I'm not sure if I'm breaking any rules here, but is there anyone with a good, used, battery for this i1300-1171? I got this from a friend a couple years ago without a working battery, and would like to see if it will run for an hour or so on it before I buy a brand new one.

Well, thats enough for now. I'd appreciate any info anyone can supply!

You can always get a USB Wireless card, instead of the PCMCIA wireless card...this would allow you to connect several USB devices at the same time, through the USB 2.0 PCMCIA card, and not have to worry about the space taken up by the wireless PCMCIA card.
