My 600x is my go to laptop!
All l have to say is that no matter what l do my 600x does it's part. The LCD is flawless and runs like a top. Compared with my T40 the 600x is still tops. Running DSL you can't tell the diff and the T40 LCD is only 97%. But it seems that was one of it's weaknesses.
Just my opinion

I agree with you, however my 600x ate it's second hard drive.. ANd the wrist rest bezel is peeling worse than an 80s Buick, lol..
..It was my second 600 series notebook and my 'countless' ThinkPad later..
I am wanting an X41 or an X60.. Something smaller ya know..

600 series on of the best!
just took my 600x (P3 500Mhz) out of storage and setup with a 17" dell with 2 usb connectors on it. Also running a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse.
I upgraded the hard drive to a hitachi 5400rpm and installed xp pro.
I have 320ram installed.
Amazing how fast this is. This has to be one of the best built lappy that IBM ever built, it is one solid machine. The keyboard is fantastic, not like a lot of the junk out today.
Parts are easy to come by, I have replaced the screen (original backlight was shot). I tried to replace the backlight myself and it had a green tint to it. So, I just replaced the whole Screen, top assemby and it looks like new.
I have a T41 too.

Didn't they sell the most 600's than any other. I think I remember hearing that.
I remember in May of 1999 buying one for ... holy crap... a lot of money.... Hold on I still have it.... Still works nicely. Looking at the model and type now... 2645-51U. You wouldn't believe what I paid for this bad boy. A workhorse thougth. This 600 has become my loaner. Traveled more than me when some clients needed it.

By the way l'm running DSL in my one and only usb port, what can l do to add another usb port for a fax/copier/scanner?

thats wierd ,because the 7.2k40 hitachi runs darn sweet and quiet on my rig)
with optioned intel drivers in xp i saw up to 39 mps burst from supposed to be 33mps host bus + max 36 +average 31mps right across its 40gb platter with hdd tach 2.70 whilst surfing the net on
108mps wifi +downloading torrents the same time too!go figure)!
battery seems no different to 5400 rpm or 4200 drives
either.

I also get great performance on my 600X with a 7200 40GB Hitachi drive. I've not benchmarked it, but I can actually notice the difference in speed between two very similar Hitachi Travelstar drives: a 5400rpm 40GB and a 7200rpm 40GB.unrortit wrote:thats wierd ,because the 7.2k40 hitachi runs darn sweet and quiet on my rig)kingman99 wrote:Hi

unrortit, you mention that you are using optional intel drivers or something? Can you clarify what drivers you mean? I'd be interested in improving drive performance further if there are drivers to do so.
Thanks,
Phil.

go TO DEVICE MANAGER AND 'I CHOSE TO INSTALL drivers/IDE DRIVERS
UNDER INTEL 80XXX??? ERR I'LL GET BACK not on my laptop now.
anyways what i suspect because that particular ide driver was more intended for the newer chipsets with wifi cards etc it may have contributed not so much in raw throughput but the way it managed the io interrupts to the point so efficient i saw hdd tach peak at 39-40mps host bus a couple of times+ geniune reads peaking as high as 36 a few times and regularly high 31mps and average over 30mps in sustained reads and host around 31.6mps
other software verifies no less than 29mps ,sandra score of 20,400,which implys faster than desktop ata100 5400rpm, ata66 7200 rpm drive ,somewhere inbetween them and
ata 100/133 7200rpm desktop units
seek times are geniune 7ms on ata 100 desktop, and 8ms from within the ata33 restricted by ibm bx chipset, its a known fact the bx chipsets are indeed ata66 capable on decent asus mobos.
you can try any of the intel ab -ba drivers for the time being
till i head over the other joint to get the specific driver its currently on,i was so in awe of the bench tests i forgot about the driver ver.
are you happy with battery usage?i am!
theres also a nice windows proggie that can scan drive for sectors
efficiency which also has adjustments for seperate main powers
and battery power settings in windows on the fly,i maxed em all out whick kinda made it more snappy too.
if you need the software let us know.
