Will a WI-FI card work with this older system? How about USB card? I know this thing is ancient but I still like it and use it often when visiting not so nice areas in our great country. I now have it to 72meg RAM with a 6.4 GB hard drive with Windows 98SE installed.
Any comments?

I've used an Orinoco Gold card with my 365X without problems. I don't think Cardbus is supported, so you'd want to stick to 16-bit PC Cards.

A 16BIT (PCMCIA) WiFi card will work just fine, but you must have a 32BIT (Cardbus) enabled PC card slot in order to use any type of USB card and the 365XD doesn't have one.

Several companies did make 16-bit USB 1.0 (or maybe 1.1) cards, way back when. You should be able to find them on eBay.

But lately, I haven't found any new USB cards that aren't CardBus.

There ain't no such animal and never was.

Just as there are no ISA based USB cards for desktops, only PCI cards, there are no 16BIT PCMCIA USB cards.

A USB card is based on the PCI standard, ergo it requires a Cardbus enabled (32BIT) PC slot. USB is also based on a shared IRQ protocol and ISA (16BIT) devices cannot share IRQs.

This is also the reason why there's no such thing as a serial to USB adapter.

Dang, I was *sure* I had seen one. I know it's possible to use a USB chip (which are everywhere) and hook it up to an ISA bus. Apparently no one thinks it's worthwhile. Anyway, here's something that might do the trick: A network-based shareable USB hub.

Keyspan US-4A Device Server. Go to amazon.com and search for B0001NA3L2. I know you can get 16-bit network cards. You can even get 16-bit 802.11b cards (maybe that's what I was thinking of), like the LinkSys WPC11, version 3 (I have one) or earlier.

With what model did IBM change from PCMCIA to cardbus? I can live with out USB on that laptop but I am looking for a 16 bit Wi-Fi card on fleabay now. Thanks for the info.

There wasn't any singular model that made the jump to Cardbus among Thinkpads.

In the 3 series, the 380XD was the first in 1998, joined by the 560X in the 5 series. But the 760EL was a Cardbus machine and that was released in 1996.

It's fairly safe to assume that any laptop manufactured after 1998 is Cardbus enabled.

Look for an Orinoco Gold WiFi card on eBay. One of the best cards available and it's 16BIT.
