Hi, this may sound sort of stupid, but what is this port for?

Mostly used for dial up internet.Can be used for Faxes.

How do i use it, do i need any thing for it, or can i just plug in a phone line?

Just plug in a phone line and use your internet service provider's software for dial-up access to the internet.

If you're doing this in a hotel, be sure it's an ANALOG phone line.

If you're at home, just plug and play.
