After attempting to get Windows XP to work on my 560X and a 32MB EDO SODIMM in its memory slot... WITHOUT A PAGEFILE (don't laugh!) it seems that I could do with a bit more oomph.

IBM says that this laptop can take up to 96MB, yet I've seen reports on Google off some Thinkpad mailing list that, assuming you can get hold of one, you can whack a 128MB EDO in there and thus max out at 160MB. Which might just work for my little project.

Is this true?

Yes it does work. At least for the 233 MHz TFT screen version of the 560x that I use. There are 200MHz and STN screen 560x but I haven't tried those. 560z's can use the 128MB EDO's as well. The down side it that these memories can cost more than a TP560x

Indeed, so it might make more sense to upgrade to a 570E and sell the 560X. The 570E has a much nicer screen with higher resolution, much faster processor, is slightly lighter than the 560X, and can have up to 320MB of memory, enough to run Win XP Pro very well. Perhaps it can also use bigger hard drives than the 560X.

Thanks for the advice. I was originally looking at the 570 series because it has a sweet spec but the CPU requires a fan, this project requires that the system be good for long-term use in a relatively hot and dusty environment.

I just won a 570E with 500MHz PIII, 320MB RAM and ultrabase (with CD drive) for $95 shipped! If you buy something like that and sell your 560X for $40, you get yourself a very nice upgrade for only $55, comparable to the price of a 128MB EDO module!
