701C doesn't power on

#1 Post by rcristobal » Sun Jun 17, 2007 8:31 pm

I have a 701C that I have not turned on since last year
and tried this week to turned it on with AC plugged in but nothing. Then today it lit up for a few seconds and there was burnt smell
in the location of the laptop and ac adapter.

If I can't get this to work then I will be selling all the parts from it.
I have all the accessories and plugs.

701C doesn't power on

#2 Post by hjanzen » Sat Jun 23, 2007 10:00 am

I have a similar problem:
Yesterday I got a Thinkpad 701C.
Upon arrival I was eager to start my new friend, but great was my
disappointment when it remainded completely dead on AC adapter power as well on battery only.
Following the instructions that I found in the maintenance pdf I have removed RAM, Battery, HD and tried to start again. But it remains dead. The last instruction reads: Change the top system board.
I cannot find this on Ebay, only the bottom ones are offered as we all know by Cuiinc.
Any help is much appreciated.

By the way, what if the so called backup battery on the top systemboard is dead?
Could that prevent starting as well?

Have you tried to push the switch realy hard forward when you tried to start?
I had the same problem, the switch goes easy and I tought it was ok,but it needs to be pushed a little more to start
