My buddy recently has given me a thinkpad 760EL with the ac power adapter internal 20x cd-rom external floppy drive, modem card, and lan card (needs some cable). It also has a battery in it but im not sure if it works. At this time it has windows NT workstation 4.0 installed and im not exactly sure on how to check the hardware specs on it.

I usually only work with desktop computers, so i know very little about this laptop. What i would like to do with this is get a different OS on it possibly windows 98 but i dont know how to install it, check if the battery works or learn how to charge or use it, install a wireless card and possibly usb.

The main thing im really concerned with at this point in time is putting windows 98 on it and I can work up from there.

Any help or locations to any info that may help me would be greatly appricated.

Win98 works great on it. I went with Win98SE, and even Win2000 or ME will run on it, but not as smoothly. I've heard XP stripped down can run, but not for practical use.

Can't walk you through, since it's been a few years since I configged a 760, but it wasn't too hard.

A USB PCMCIA card may work. I never got one though. I did get a 802.11b card working on it though. It should support G and N too. The battery should be a Li-Ion or Ni-Mh. The Li-Ion ones seem to die eventually, so check to see how good a charge it can hold. Most of mine died already. I have no idea about Ni-Mh though.

As old as this is, I love the look, feel and build of this model above all other ThinkPads. The XD was my personal fave, and the one I used the most.

The 760 Ultrabay is also very flexible.

The space the CD-Rom is in can hold a variety of components:

• 1. CD-Rom (Up to 24x was available)
• 2. Second HDD
• 3. Second battery (With a bezel)
• 4. Floppy (Can be removed from that external case and placed in the same slot. (Again, with a bezel)
• 5. Type III PCMCIA card slot (Faces leftward)
• 6. Zip 100MB Drive

IIRC, the 760C and another one or two only allowed the floppy/hd/battery, but I think the EL could handle them.

That's about all I can think of atm.

Need the 98 boot floppy and a 98 CD. Go with 98 Second Edition. You can find it for sale on Ebay.

Have both inserted and boot laptop. The floppy will give you three options to boot up from.

You can find and download a free 98 boot floppy by just googling for "boot floppy".

I would perform a search on "760" in this forum to discover all the issues concerning the 760 series, they have all been discussed previously.
