Thinkpad 701C
Thinkpad 701C
I like the 701C because it's very light, small and the software I use doesn't require Pentium speeds. Windows 95 is installed. But there's the dark side. Sometimes, upon bootup, the system freezes or hangs while it does the memory check (I "think"). I did basic checks of the system but can't determine any conflicts. I was advised it could be a memory problem. But if so, it would freeze all the time, I guess. Is there another method to check the memory or system? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks in advance.
A mythical machine, perhaps?
Do you really have a P133 701C, or is it a 486/133 , which is comparable to a P75?JHEM wrote:Some of the fleet: P133MHz 701C,...
I have been debating geting a 701 upgraded, but can't decide if it is really worth a couple of hundred dollars. Do you find that the faster 701 is something you use much?
Good day,
Re: A mythical machine, perhaps?
Actually, it's an AMD 586/133, which is equivalent to a P75. Sometimes, I get confused!Severian wrote: Do you really have a P133 701C, or is it a 486/133 , which is comparable to a P75?
I can't recall the last time I had it off the shelf, more than 6 months ago I'm sure. With all the other vessels in the fleet, I've got a lot of dock queens.Severian wrote:I have been debating geting a 701 upgraded, but can't decide if it is really worth a couple of hundred dollars. Upgrading the 701 was an exercise for me, it had no practical application, just something I wanted to do.

Well, I guess I'll let you get away with calling it a 586. AMD did officially use that name, even though it was really a 486 core.JHEM wrote:Actually, it's an AMD 586/133, which is equivalent to a P75. Sometimes, I get confused!![]()
Does your 701 have one of the 64 meg memory upgrades? I think the 586/133 with 64 meg is about as good as it gets with a 701.
I have noticed that one of my 701CS screens is getting dim. I hope I don't have to put that machine to sleep, for good. I have 1 701C and 2 701CS machines. I recently upgraded the drive on the 701C and did a fresh install, The better 701CS is next. They each have an assigned task and do them well.
If I get really ambitious, I'll have to get my 730 up and running. A decent sized pcmcia hard drive ought to be cheap enough by now. Finding the video driver nowdays may be tough.
Good day,
Yes, the "Official" name for the chip was a 586/133. Runs as fast with the 64MB stick as my venerable P75 755CD.
I could never get used to any of the Dual-Scan displays I've had over the years.
Good luck finding drivers for the 730.

James

Extended Diagnostic: Press F1 WHILE powering up your 701.thinkvic wrote:I like the 701C because it's very light, small and the software I use doesn't require Pentium speeds. Windows 95 is installed. there you should be able to test your ram with CONTROL-A you get even more self-diagnostic for your buterfly
ps. another gimmick: FN-left shift then FN-ENTER after that reboot. should give you 60Hz non interlaced for external monitors
