Have to push keys down very hard for them to work.

I put this here for a lack of a good place to put it.
I have a Japanese IBM Thinkpad model 535E with keys on the right side of the keyboard...especially "O" and "P" that I must literally pound while typing for them to work. If I type normally, these keys don't respond and I end up with text without the "O" and "P." Although a Japanese machine with Japanese keyboard, the quality is typical IBM (American) and very very good. They keyboard feels extremely nice and has a great touch.
I am going to Japan next week and could look for and pick up another keyboard for this ThinkPad, but I was wondering if on an American ThinkPad, if and when this happens, if there is a solution. In other words, could I take the keyboard out, lubricate, push up the springs under the keys, etc. to make the keys more responsive? I guess I could take the keyboard out and take a look but before I do this, I wanted to get others' opinion.s
Thanks in advance!
