Fan on 770ED

Hi all.
The fan on my 770ED runs at startup for about 5 seconds or so then stops. I did a search and saw a note about the fan on a 600 being temperature dependent. Is this true for the 770 as well? I've had this laptop for a while now and I can't say I have noticed this before. I bought a "new" fan from eBay and it exhibits the same anomaly.
Any help or comments are welcome.

Hello again. That's my post up there. I forgot to logon before posting. Duh, my bad. Just to add the fan does not run at all after that little bit at startup. When it gets hot enough the performance gets sluggish. Last night I ended up putting on a ziploc filled with ice and then it perked up.
Thanks again.

OK. After doing my research I have come to the assumption that the fan is temperature dependent and is controlled by the DC-DC card. Could anyone confirm these findings?
I did a system test using F1 and everything got an ok and the fan ran the whole time. I have the latest bios but not the latest battery maximiser. Is it possible that just loading the new maximiser coudl fix it. I am somewhat cautious because the DVD player and wireless card are all living in perfect harmony and I don't want to "rock the boat". I am guessing that I may not have a choice but I was hoping someone out there has fixed this issue before.
Thanks in advance.

This has been discussed a couple of times....Seems everyone with a 770ED has the same problem.....and as far as I know,no one has found a fix....from what i've heard and read, this only happens with W2K and XP...everything is fine with 95 or 98(not even going to list ME)....but i'm not sure as mine always had XP on it......Other people actually had their machines shutting themselves down due to the heat...mine never did...
When I had my ED,it was the same, you could hear it spin up at boot, but never again, now matter how long you leave it on.....One thing you could try is to leave the cover off the bottom that covers the memory, but be careful not to scrape it on something...
Now I have a 770X(among others),that the fan comes on and off as needed....works like it should...!!!!....
Sorry I can't be of more help....

Thanks. I appreciate the response. Actually mine is running 98se. I am a couple of versions behind on the trackpoint, configuration utility and the maximiser. I will post if upgrading those has any effect. I saw a DC-DC card the other day for $30 and thought if it was guaranteed I might try it. The new fan set me back a whopping $12 dollars and it even came with the PII 266 processor.
Well I'll keep looking.
