Upgrading the 600X LCD screen

#1 Post by BillG » Sat Jun 30, 2007 1:26 pm

Anyone tried upgrading or just replacing the 600X's LCD screen?

I bought mine brand new, and after all these years the LCD screen has lost it's luster - or rather, the contrast isn't what it used to be and I often have to angle the screen waaaay backwards to see contrasting colors and text.

Has anyone upgraded the LCD on the 600X to a more modern screen? What are your recommendations? Or is a direct replacement of the original LCD sufficient?

600X Screen Replacement......

#2 Post by Robin Mutoid » Mon Jul 02, 2007 1:12 pm

I haven't tried/researched 'upgrading' the 600 screen as such but have replaced several with good second hand units.. you may find it quicker /easier to replace the entire lid/screen unit if you can find one. I did hear a rumour that perhaps the screen power supply firmware in the earlier 600s was different (consumed more power) than on the later 600s but they are surely all interchangeable.. good luck!

Thanks. I also want to know if replacing the screen will make any difference.

For example, when you look at this forum, between the Author column and the Message column, there is a thin white line. When I have my 600X screen angled normaly, I do not see that line. But if I angle the screen waaay backwards so that it is about 45º off the desk, I can then see that thin white line clearly (but the screen angle then skews proportions).

Modern laptop LCDs have the contract similar to a CRT. I'm wondering if replacing my LCD will make such a difference.

Has anyone replaced their 600X LCD and are now seeing the difference I am describing? :?:

I don't think replacing the LCD with a different would solve much. It would be very hard to find an LCD compatible with the 600 series in new condition. The last 600 was made over 6 years ago so the newest LCD you could find would be about 4 years old (these would be LCDs that were replaced under warranty. You may be lucky to find an LCD that was never used much, but 95% of all the 600 series I've seen have been worked until their death.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
