Thinkpad 600 and 600X are the adapters interchangeable?
Thinkpad 600 and 600X are the adapters interchangeable?
Yes I have two thinkpads 600 + 600X and personally I like 600 better.
The part numbers for the AC adapters are almost identical;
02k6557
02k6555
I do think that these are the numbers and actually the higher one belongs to what appears to be 600.
So just to be on the safe side are they both interchangeable regardless?

Both 600 and 600X systems are rated for a 56 watt adapter (16V @ 3.36A; which works out to be 53.76 watts, but I digress...), so as long as either supply can provide at least 3.36A, then no problem.

Ray,
Quick question. I have a cpuple of older IBM AC adapters. they are 2.2 amps. Will they work with a 600 or does it absolutely have to be at least 3.36 amps?
Thanks.

I believe that the 600 systems need the 3.36A supplies. Look on the bottom of the laptop and it should say somewhere on the large IBM label. Trying to power the system with a 2.2A supply, assuming that it's ALSO supplying 16 volts, would probably stress the AC adapter.

My IBM is16V and 3.36A INPUT
My AC adapter is 16V and 3.36 OUTPUT = 53W. 16x3.36=53
I could use 16V and 4.5 OUTPUT = 72W. 16x4.5=72
Your AC adapter’s output voltage should be the same as your laptops input voltage.
The ac adapters output amps can be equal to or greater but not LESS.
If my laptops input is 4.5 and I tried to use a 3.36 output ac adapter there would not be enough power to run the laptop. It might work for a while but I would advise against it.

Thanks for the info Reo. The TP600 I was going to use it on is an older one with a 12" screen, so I guess it needs a little less power then the newer one requiring 3.36amps. The botom says 16v & 2.6 amps. So what would happen by using a 2.2 amp adapter on a computer needing 2.6 amps? Would it fry the adapter? that I could live with as long as it doesn't damage the laptop

What happens with power supplies if you (try to) draw too much current is that the voltage drops. More current gets you less voltage.
At some point the power supply fails to keep up, or smokes, or the laptop can't generate the proper internal voltages and something breaks or the system becomes unreliable.

Good points. But considering the battery only supplies 10v, I can't imagine the laptop would mind too much if it didn't get all of the 16v it needed from the a/c adapter. It won't be running for very long periods of time, maybe 10-20 minutes at a time.
Thanks for the insight though.
