I have a 600E 2645-8AU. I was wondering if it is possible to swap out my system board for that of a 600X without changing any other components. Will it physically fit into the shell?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!
You can
usually find your answers by searching the archives (unless your request is really strange

). In this case, clicking the "Search" link at the top of the page and entering "swap motherboard 600e 600x" and selecting the "search for all terms" option, yields this:
Motherboard swap question for Thinkpad 600E
In short, no, not really. There are a couple of things which get in the way. Biggest item is that the MiniPCI slot on the 600X motherboard will not be accessible (from the outside) in the 600E base. If you don't mind that, then another thing is the audio jacks on the right side are different enough that you will probably need to modify the case to make it fit. All-in-all, you'd be better off with replacing the entire bottom section (i.e., keep the keyboard and entire lid assembly from your 600E).

You can sometimes get a 600X case bottom for about $10 on eBay.

With or without electronics?
Seriously, I'd be glad to see such a bargain here in Germany. Maybe prices are lower in the States.
