Hi all ..

Before installing a GNU/Linux on this laptop, I want to get a larger capacity hard drive. I already updated the BIOS to the latest (AFAIK) version : the 1.10 one.

So, can you tell me how to look for/recognize a hard drive which would be compatible with the 365XD ? What is the largest capacity this BOS can support, BTW ?

Take a look at Bill's old forum, I'm pretty sure there was some discussion there.

The problem is, I went there and found only 2 things in the 3xx series conference. When I tried a search, it found nothing :(

Yeah, it looks like the posts are gone.

I seem to recall that 8GB was the maximum hard drive capacity, but I'm not sure.

How about using a DDO, or something similar? I downloaded a program from Hitachi that creates a bootable floppy with their "ftool" program on it. I assume this was meant for IBM's since it loads IBM DOS when it boots up, and automatically runs ftool. With ftool I am able to change lots of different thing about the hard drive namely UDMA mode, and change the capacity that the HD reports to the bios. I used it to change the capacity of my 40gb travelstar to 4gb, BIOS sees 4gb and Windows 2K sees it as 40gb.
Hope this helps,
Justin

P.S. I'm pretty sure that I remember references to IBM machines in the description of ftool, i think many of hitachi's HD utilities are directed toward IBM.

Ok, so far, I finally found a SoDIMM EDO 64 Mb for the beast and it works beautifully ...

For the hard drive, I think I'll leave it at that .. :(
