Hi, a friend of mine has a Tp 600x. well performance is getting a little sluggish.im just confirming what i know the max cpu speed is a p3 850 mhz, max ram is 580. Also i tend to forget which is the faster hd the 5400 rpm or the 7200 rpm. thanks guys.

cpu is at 500 mhz
hd is a 12g with about 400 mb left

I just bought a 600x today for $50. I plan to put a 60gig 5400RPM HD in it (Hint: there is a great deal for these in the Marketplace for $28...), max out the RAM and throw a PIII 650 in there.

It looks like your buddy has the HD pretty crammed. HD's are cheap & easy to upgrade. 7200RPM would be the best, but he will still see an improvement with a 5400RPM. He can also find a 256mb stick of RAM to max that out. They are about $30 or so on E-bay these days if you hunt.

Your posting had an amusing problem... you wrote $28 and then closed the brackets. The problem is that the system interpreted the "8" and the ")" together as a "cool" emoticon and your comment was transformed into a "$2" and an emoticon.

At first sight, I thought you were joking... then I realized what had happened. So to my great regret, I guess I won't be buying a 60gig HD for $2 any time soon

The 9FU had a 650Mhz cpu as standard - XP natively supports speedstep so should step speed up and down as required - assuming a "good" battery is fitted it will run at 500Mhz normally and step up to 650Mhz under load. 850Mhz is the fastest MMC2 intel produced but they are rare as rocking horse $h*t and twice the price

At this date, it's possible the 600X has 2645-9FU on the case but had its motherboard and CPU replaced with the slower model.

If you have the slower motherboard, any CPU will run at 150MHz less than its maximum: A 650MHz CPU will run at 500, and an 850MHz will run at 700MHz, unless you hack it (and I don't know how, but it's here on this forum somewhere).

Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual for the machine (in this site's FAQ), open it up and look for the system board (motherboard) part number and see what you have.

Don't go by the speed that Windows gives you. Go into EZSetup (hold F1 when you turn it on) and see what CPU speed that gives you. If it says 650, you can get the full benefit of the faster CPU just by plugging it in. (My -5FU has an 800MHz CPU.)

The original 12GB drives are now seven years old. A new drive will be a lot faster, quieter and much more reliable. Good idea.

He He....fixed now. If they were $2 each, I would have bought 100 of them & flipped them on E-bay.
