There is only one way to do it: search for items with a "Buy It Now" option and keep refreshing the results page once a minute or so. As soon as you see something you like, buy it. I used to do it and it's such a waste of time.

Not from me anymore. I'll just "upgrade" a spare 600E I have.

Next week I'll finally order those dinky batteries!

I hate to say it, but not a very good deal. Now i know that the deals on ebay vary, but if you notice my post from last week I won a 600X for $56 plus shipping that included everthing but the AC adapter. It arrived today and I am using it now to type this reply. I am VERY impressed overall with the condition! The keyboard does have some lettering wear, but I can swap it out with a few spares that I have. The overall physical condition is very nice-some very light scuffs and wear, but nothing abnormal for an almost 7 year old laptop. It came with a 500MHz CPU, 192MB RAM, 12GB hard drive, 24X CD-ROM, a working battery that lasts for a long time (!), and a Netgear wireless B card.

I have to say-one of the best ebay deals I have found yet!

Yes, that is definately a great deal Eric. I got a few like that. My best was a 600e with everything, including the ac adapter and even a wireless card and a Targus case for just under $14 - 270145918603. Although it did cost me $35 to ship it. It even had a fairly new battery. The only thing wrong with it was a few keys didn't work. No problem as I have a parts 600.

The point of my showing that 600x was for someone with say a 600 that wants to upgrade. If they have one of the newer 600's with the 13.3" screen, they could swap screens, HD, battery, etc and upgrade from a PII 266mhz to a PIII 500mhz for fairly cheap. As a stand alone item, you are right, not a huge deal, but it has potential.

I have for business and now personnal use, my Thinkpad 600 with a 40 GB 5400 rm drive and 160 M RAM. I am absolutely addicted to that machine which is now 9 years old and visited a lot of countries around the world without any failure!.
I did different trials with upgrading memory and I did not succed. Can you give me your best advice about the type of Ram I should add. I have 128M and the original 32 M on board. I read different posts on that subject and it is not clear to me what is THE solution to upgrade to 288M or more?
Also for those who upgraded the processor to PIII what is the process to do it?
My two batteries are now from refill.com and I am fully satisfied with their products.

I had 416MB running successfully in my 600. You need low density, PC66 RAM to work in the 600. BUT, one slot can read PC100 at full speed, but only reads PC100 at half speed in the other slot. So, what you need to find is 1 stick of PC66 128MB RAM and one stick of PC100 256 RAM. Since the first slot will only read PC66 at full speed, put the 128 stick in the slot closest to the front of the laptop & the 256 stick in the back slot. Then you will be able to run at 416. If you can find some low density, PC66, 256 RAM (Very hard to find & expensive), then you can max out at 540MB. But you need PC66 RAM in the first slot.

For reference, the part number for pc100 256MB RAM is 33L3070. Do a search on E-bay and you will find a few.

The 600 uses a MMC-1 type processor. The fastest speed you can get in the MMC-1 is 400mhz. Do a search on E-bay for MMC-1 in Pentium II laptop CPU's and you will find some. There are not many 400 ones avalable, but you can find them. I paid $50 for mine about 6 months ago, but I did a quick search just now and found one for $25:

Changing the 300 MHZ processor for a 400 MHZ, does your battery last less time. My batterie last about 2h 30 mn. Also is there any heat problem?

I would suggest you to take a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

I've never had a Pentium III computer before. Is a PIII 450/500Mhz slower or faster than an AMD 700Mhz? (which I had in my old desktop) Is PIII 850Mhz the fastest CPU a 600 can take?

Take a look at linux for reviving your old thinkpads. Especially ubuntu 7.10, which I have running on my new T60 (dualboot with XP) as well as this T40 (ubuntu/XP) for 8 months, now. I Also retro-fitted one 570 and another 570 is WIP.

So I dusted off my old 600 to see how it would do with ubuntu, but it gave me a 00192 at power-on, but the fine feel of that good old 600 convinced me to solve the problem. When I get that running well it will go off to a family member as (basically) a desktop system since it's a little heavy for a modern portable, but the KB is deluxe.

Last-generation TPs make excellent gifts. I just prep them well and don't worry about what happens later. They seem to disappear mysteriously, sometimes stolen, sometimes sold, sometimes swapped, sometimes defunct or into the back of a closet. I never ask. Must have given a dozen various TPs to kids. 560's, 570's, T23's, never had one come back. Now I'm prepping an old 570 for a 9 yr old in Paris that will have everything she needs onboard since her mom doesn't have an internet connection at home and isn't going to get one soon, having a archaic notion that people should socialize face-to-face even if they have to travel 10,000 miles to do it.

The T23 is the obvious successor to the 600, but the TP that reminded me most of my good old 600 is the T60. When I first opened the lid on my new T60 it reminded me exactly of the sturdy clean feel of the 600. Like the 600, the T60 is a bit too heavy to be regularly used on long distance trips, but it makes an excellent desktop replacement unit.

And if you have too many TPs I suggest leaving a TP at someone elses home as a convenience computer for use when you travel there regularly. I often leave a small piece of luggage containing a change of clothes, shave kit, computer, etc., at a friends house in a distant city. Small financial exposure and very convenient if I happen that way unplanned. Also, the old TP560 that i left in a remote european country house many years ago has served many other people who needed it unexpectedly. Now, it has a very yellow screen, so I'll replace it soon with, perhaps, a 570 or 600.
