Does anyone know if the cpu is soldered into the card its on or is it in a socket? I know the mmc-2 is socketed in the mainboard, I mean the cpu itself.

It's socketed. I just took my 600x apart and have the CPU on the table. Looks like a normal one for a desktop PC, but about half the size.

Ah, that's great -- I've had mine apart a couple of times -- had to replace the power connector -- but never took the fan off the cpu, just removed the whole card. I got a 700mhz cpu from a T20 on ebay, thought it was the whole card, but it was only the cpu.
So it should plug right in.

... and should have first checked my head . Terribly sorry, I took my T21 apart, not the 600x. The 600x uses a CPU card.

Right, I know it uses a card, but is the cpu socked into that card or soldered?

I have a MMC-2 card for a 600E on the shelf. The heat spreader is fastened to the card by what looks like rivets. The chips under the heat spreader appear to be ball grid array soldered to the card. I don't believe the card was meant to be disassembled. Beyond that cards for faster CPU's may have different supporting circuitry like more decoupling capacitors. You will probably need to find a complete MMC-2 card with the CPU speed you want.

Thanks -- I guess I'll put that 700mhz cpu back on ebay. :(
