Backlight Failure on 770E Due to Weak AC Power Supply

The title pretty well sums it up. I started my 770E this afternoon and was horrified to see that the backlight had failed... only a week or so after I had used the computer last and seen absolutely no problems.

I took the keyboard off, swapped the display with another I had... and the result was the same. Oh, No!

About ready to give up and call it a (lousy) day, the thought occurred to me that I might try another AC power supply, since the one I was using was a little small and was not the standard IBM model.

And of course that was the problem. Suddenly the backlight was just fine again. The difference between thge AC adapters: the one that works fine is the 4.5 Amp output model from IBM (FRU 02K6744). The weak one is a no-name with an output rating of 2A at 5V and 2A at 12V.

Just wanted to put this on record in case somebody else has such a problem.
