This part fell out of a 24x CD in my 600X.( the triangular hook shipped metal thingy)
I was removing the caddy to see if a combo drive I have would be compatible (it wasn't)
The unit seems to function without any issues, but left over parts are not the ideal situation.
The Cd Rom is P/N 27L3687 and the part is definitely from the front bezel area around the hook locking mechanism.
Anyone with a hint what this does, where it goes and is it of earth-shaking importance that it be where it should be?
Thanks

Can't really tell what it is since clicking on the image does not access a larger version at imageshack.us (if that was the intention).

Looks like part of the latch (hook) assembly which keeps the drive inside the Ultraslimbay - the bottom part of the caddy which is located a little bit closer to the camera in your picture. I'm not home at the moment but if nobody has come around in the next hour or two I'll take a look at one of my 600Xs.

Looks like it's some kind of reinforcement for the plastic latch on the drive caddy, but I've looked at several Ultrabay drives I have for the 600 series and none have anything but the plastic latch - at least I can't see a metal part underneath the plastic (certainly not above it).

If you take the entire caddy off of the optical drive, there may indeed be a metal reinforcement in the hook. Here's a picture of the underside of a caddy from one of my 600X systems:

The metal hook rests inside, held either by glue or friction. Do I win anything?

The medal for service above and beyond the call of duty
I didn't think that the reinforcement would be
inside the plastic.

Hey, thanks!
I had posted two other pictures:
http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_600x/image ... ails_1.jpg
http://www.rkawakami.net/ibm_600x/image ... ails_2.jpg
two months ago but now I can't remember what they were in reference to. I think somebody had a question about what it took to transfer/install a "standard" notebook optical drive into a 600-series system and that led me to post the first two pictures.
